What are some ways I can improve to become better "parent" material?

your best source is older people who've a proven track record in raising kids....don't expect to find perfect ones--they aren't there!...but gleaning all the knowledge from grandparents,or older people around you is a wise move in and of itself(not just for parenting, but life in general!)..have fun, it WILL be rewarding.
