What state sees a lot of flooding and storms that could cause pretty extensive water damage?

I'm writing a story about a murderer who is squatting in an old house near a river in the countryside that is very water damaged. i was thinking Mississippi for obvious reasons but since I don't live in the states, I don't know. So all you guys state side, can you help me out?
