How do i sync my WMP library to my new ipod nano?..?

i hooked up the nano and went into WMP and it didnt show up ..i couldnt get it to show up as being connected ...do i have to join itunes or something and buy a whole new friggin playlist of songs?..cant i use the ones i have?....perhaps it isnt compatible with WMP?
