Why are children being brought up as princesses and pirates?

You've probably all seen the commercials, movies and TV shows where little boys are brought up as astronauts, pirates, firemen, ect while little girls are given princess dresses, cooking things, and clothes? I'm not saying all children are being raised like that but many are. Is this ism being taught to our next generation?
